According to CBC’s biography of Isobel Stanley, this photograph taken at Rideau Hall in 1890 is thought to be the first recorded image of women’s participation in hockey. Isobel Stanley is the player in white, wearing the customary long skirt.

Together with her brothers, Isobel is said to have helped convince her father to create what is now know as the greatest prize in hockey – the Stanley Cup.
