From me to you, highlighting challenges faced by girls

Dear Daughters, The First International Day of the Girl is Here!

Dear Daughters,

I am so happy to tell you that The United Nations has declared October 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child. It is less than a month, 23 days to be more exact, until the first ever International Day of the Girl. Check out the countdown on the Because I am A Girl webpage. They have the countdown down to the second! Now that is exact!

Because I am a Girl is a Plan Canada initiative that helped lead the successful campaign, which began in September of 2009, to have the United Nations declare October 11 as the International Day of the Girl. Read the Day of the Girl timeline of how it came to be!

Why an International Day of the Girl? I could not explain it more concisely or better than the experts so please read Why Girls on the Because I am a Girl website. To give you a brief overview though, according to them:

  • 70% of the one billion people living in extreme poverty are women and girls.
  • Girls are 3x more likely to be malnourished than boys.
  • In the poorest countries of the world, 50% of girls do not attend secondary school.
But investing in girls is worth it because:
  • An extra year of school for girls increases their lifetime income by 15%.
  • Children of women who have completed primary school are less likely to die before age 5 than children of mothers with no schooling.
  • Women invest more of their income in their families than men do.

Sounds worth it to me! Plan Canada is using this year’s International Day of the Girl to focus on the importance of girls’ education. According to Plan Canada, “Over the next five years, we aim to support 4 million girls to get the education, skills and support they need to transform their lives and the world around them.” Let’s help them reach that goal! Please note that according to the article Canada Leads the Global Movement for an International Day of the Girl, “Plan Canada was joined by many across Canada in calling for a Day of the Girl including Amnesty International, Canada’s Coalition to End Global Poverty, Canadian Crossroads International, Canadian Women’s Foundation, Girl Guides of Canada, Oxfam Canada, Oxfam Quebec, Results Canada, Save the Children Canada, White Ribbon Campaign and YWCA Canada.”

This article also states that, “Plan is a global movement for change, mobilizing millions of people around the world to support social justice for children in developing countries. Founded in 1937, Plan is now one of the world’s oldest and largest international development agencies, working in partnership with millions of people around the world to end global poverty. Not for profit, independent and inclusive of all faiths and cultures, Plan has only one agenda: to improve the lives of children.”
