Dear Daughters, Olympic Women’s Hockey Starts Tomorrow!

Dear Daughters,

Women’s Olympic Hockey starts tomorrow and as you can imagine, I cannot wait! There are two games tomorrow both from Group A. The USA plays Finland at 4am AST and Canada plays Switzerland at 9am AST. There has only been one time in Olympic history that a Women’s Gold medal game has not featured Canada vs the United States and that was in the 2006 Games when Sweden upset the United States 3-2 in the semi-final. Canada beat Sweden in the final 4-1. The United States beat Finland 4-0 to win the bronze.

There has been much disappointment when it comes to the competitiveness of women’s hockey at the international level. For instance, in that same 2006 Olympic competition, Canada beat Italy 16-0, Russia 12-0 and Sweden 8-1 in preliminary play while the Unites States beat Switzerland 6-0, Germany 5-0 and Finalnd 7-3 in preliminary play. The other Olympic Games have similar preliminary scores involving Canada and the United States against their opponents, especially those opponents ranked much lower. This year the Olympic format is different, in hopes of having much more competitive games in all rounds of play and it goes like this:

The top ranked teams (1-4) make up Group A and those teams are: Canada, United States, Switzerland and Finland. The teams ranked 5-8 make up Group B and those teams are: Russia, Japan, Germany and Sweden. During the preliminary round teams play only teams from their group. At the end of the preliminary round all 4 teams of Group A advance to the play off round: the top two teams of Group A advance straight to the semi-final and the bottom two teams will play in the quarter-final games against the top two teams in Group B after their preliminary match ups. The bottom two teams of Group B do not advance.
