From me to you, highlighting challenges faced by girls

Dear Daughters, Halloween is fast approaching…I wonder what Halloween costumes people will wear

Dear Daughters,

With Halloween approaching, I thought it would be a good idea to talk about Halloween costumes. When I asked you what Halloween costumes you think people will choose to wear this year, this is what you said:

  • pumpkins
  • televisions (someone at your school dressed up as one)
  • tornadoes (someone at your school dressed up as one and won for most original costume)
  • wolves
  • werewolves
  • ghosts
  • Frankenstein
  • Monster High
  • Batman

I then asked you if there were any Halloween costumes you could think of that girls couldn’t or shouldn’t wear and you all agreed there were none. I asked the same about boys and you all agreed that a boy could wear a Princess costume but it would be weird. Middle dear daughter, you suggested boys would likely choose to be a prince instead.

I was pleased with your answers as they made me feel that I am doing a fairly good job at teaching you not to limit people by gender. Your choices of Halloween costumes in the past also support this feeling. Between the three of you we have had tigers, frogs, monkeys, clowns, unicorns, horses, pumpkins, princesses, witches, carpenters, cowgirls, ladybugs, bumblebees, dinosaurs, Buzz Lightyears, fire fighters, and of course, our own super heroes – the Super Sisters!!!

Dear Daughters at Halloween

Watch out world…here we come! The Supersisters!

This year you, youngest and middle dear daughters, want to be devils, and eldest dear daughter, you want to be Harry Potter. When one of your friends asked you why you weren’t being Hermione you replied matter-of-factly, “Because I want to be Harry Potter.” That was a good enough reason for her. What other reason should there be?

Check out some what Amazon has to offer for Harry Potter and devil costumes.
